Sept. 5, 2019 - For the first time in the 2019 campaign, each Northeast Football Conference team is in action. Monroe hosts former NEFC member Nassau while ASA plays at Hudson Valley Saturday. Lackawanna takes on the Wagner College JV Sunday.

Rankings: With defending conference champion Lackawanna ranked No. 8 and Monroe at No. 15 in the NJCAA's first regular season poll, the NEFC has now had at least one team ranked in the last 204 NJCAA polls. The streak dates to Oct. 21, 2003. A NEFC team has been ranked 394 times since the 2002 season started.

ASA was one of 11 teams receiving votes.

Other rankings: Lackawanna is now No. 8 while ASA and Monroe were listed "on the bubble" in this week's Dirty 30.

Recent starts: After scoring 23 unanswered points in its nonconference win at DuPage, ASA is now 3-3 in its last six season openers.

Monroe improved to 6-0 in its last six season openers while Lackawanna, which is 5-0 in its last five season openers, opens the season this weekend.

Players of the Week: The Northeast Football Conference has selected Monroe's Dominique Shoffner, Emmanuel Appiah-Tahkyi and Idrissa Nikiema as the conference's players of the week.

Last Week: Quarterback Dominique Shoffner accounted for five touchdowns to lead No. 15 Monroe College (1-0) to a 71-0 shutout victory over the New Jersey Warriors Aug. 31 at Joseph F. Fosina Field. Shoffner completed 9-of-14 passes for 215 yards and four touchdowns while rushing three times for 50 yards and another score. Emmanuel Appiah-Tahkyi had two interceptions for the Mustangs.

NJCAA coach notes: Lackawanna head coach Mark Duda, who is one win away from breaking into the NJCAA's top 10 for all-time coaching wins, has amassed 177 wins to lead active NJCAA coaches in victories. With a winning percentage of 69.4, he ranks sixth among active coaches while Monroe's Terry Karg ranks ninth at 61.3 percent.

Top players: The Northeast Football Conference had five individuals listed in's Sept. 3 report of the nation's top 50 junior college recruits. They are:

Misc.: Since 2010, a Northeast Football Conference member has led the NJCAA in total defense six times -- ASA (2010, 2012, 2013 and 2018), Nassau (2011) and Monroe (2017). ASA (2018) and Monroe (2017) also led the nation in rushing defense, marking the third and fourth NEFC teams to have led that category since 2012. Lackawanna led in 2016 while ASA was the leader in 2012.

Lackawanna and Monroe both played in bowl games following the 2018 regular season. The NEFC had three teams play in bowl games in 2012. It also had two teams appear in 2008 and 2011 bowl games.

For the 2010 decade, Lackawanna and ASA both rank among the NJCAA's best in terms of final ranking points. The Falcons are tied for 13th with 48 points while the Avengers are 16th at 41 points.
