Glendale holds on to top Dean

GLENDALE, Arizona - Dec. 5, 2009 - Glendale Community College slipped past Dean College 10-9 in the 29th edition of the Valley of the Sun Bowl, which was played at GCC's Matt O. Hanhila Stadium.

Valley of the Sun Bowl logoGlendale scored in the first quarter on a field goal by Jordan Sanchez and in the second quarter on a 20-yard touchdown run by tailback D'Angelo Jones, who was named the game's Most Valuable Player. Jones had 11 carries for 56 yards and the lone touchdown of the game.

Both defenses dominated the game as both teams punted eight times. Glendale did have trouble keeping Dean quarterback Antony Baskersville in check as he nearly won the game for the Bulldogs in the final frame. He completed a 17-yard pass to William Brown but Brown was pushed out of the back of the end zone by Glendale defenders and was unable to get a foot down for the go-ahead touchdown.

As a result, Dean settled for its third field goal from Long Ding (35, 35 and 29 yards) and Glendale held on for a 10-9 win.

The win was Glendale's 11th in the history of the Valley of the Sun Bowl and moved its record to 7-5. The loss ended Dean's season at 9-2.
