The 18th-ranked Gauchos held a 25-6 lead late in the third quarter but could not stop Dean quarterback Jamal Small and the Bulldogs in the final 20 minutes of the game. Small engineered three late touchdown drives, including a 24-yard strike to Rodney Whitehead with 2:34 left in the fourth quarter to give the Bulldogs a narrow 26-25 lead.
Glendale drove the length of the field and was in position to secure a victory but Jordan Reuschoff's 34-yard field goal attempt with 34 seconds left did not go through the uprights.
Small earned MVP honors after completing 17 of 33 passes for 210 yards and three touchdowns. He also had 38 rushing yards. Robert Jackson had six receptions for 73 yards and a score. Demetri Davis also caught a touchdown pass.
Glendale looked to be heading toward its third-straight Valley of the Sun Bowl victory when the Gauchos jumped out to a 22-6 halftime lead. Quarterback Spencer Stone hit Anthony Hughes for a 22-yard TD to begin the Gaucho scoring in the first quarter, which was followed up by a 74-yard touchdown pass to Antwann Jackson. Avery Boykin returning a blocked extra point 92 for two points and Reuschoff made field goals of 31 and 34 yards.
Stone completed 21 of 41 passes for 323 yards and the two touchdowns but was intercepted three times. Demetrius Wilson had six catches for 86 yards while Jamil Hines led Glendale with 68 rushing yards on 18 attempts.
